Jungian Functions
The Jungian functions were developed by Carl Jung as a way of further studying why/how you do what you do inside your brain. It is based lightly off the idea of MBTI, using the same letter sequence.
The Jungian Functions say that there are eight cognitive functions that everyone possesses. However, only four of these functions are generally used by your brain. It is the order of the functions that determines your type. In the following, I will be dealing with primarily the first four functions, since your brain very rarely uses the others consciously (perhaps only once or twice in your lifetime) called shadow functions.
So, everyone has one S, N, F, and T function. (Two introverted and two extroverted.) When talking about functions, generally the shadow functions are not included--just a person's main 4 functions. The order of the functions determines your personality type.
If you are an introvert, your four first functions will go Xi-Xe-Xi-Xe. If you are an extrovert, your functions will go Xe-Xi-Xe-Xi. (E stands for extroverted and I stands for introverted. Everyone has two extroverted functions and two introverted functions. If you are extroverted, the first and third will be extroverted. If you are introverted, the first and third will be introverted.)
The Functions:
Fe - [extroverted feeling] Fe connects (or disconnects) and considers others and the group
as a whole when organizing. They often adjust to accommodate others, and decide when something is appropriate or not. They often feel responsible to take care of other’s feelings, however sometimes not differentiating from their own.
Fi – [introverted feeling] Fi is often associated with images or reactions instead of words. This function can be hard to identify since it often works under the surface and serves as a filter for external values and worth. Fi also helps us realize when people are being insincere or fake.
Te – [extroverted thinking] Te is very organized and take-charge. It plans and organizes ideas and the external world. It helps us notice missing things, work efficiently, and challenge missing logic and facts. Te also tries to find the logic behind someone else’s ideas or plans, and often makes some explanation.
Ti – [introverted thinking] Ti notices logical inconsistencies and tries to find the right words to express ideas accurately and to the point. This function is also often used in analysis or attempting to narrow down ideas and plans. Ti looks over all sides of a problem and tries to find any glitches or mistakes in it.
Ne – [extroverted intuition] Ne finds meanings and representations behind behavior. It interprets meaning from this and weaves these into their own personal beliefs. Ne often can balance many ideas and concepts at the same time, brainstorming new ideas and imaging the future in combination with their current ideas.
Ni – [introverted intuition] Ni is often the ‘Aha!’ moment. It often thinks in patterns and abstract concepts, often working like a paperclip chain to get us from one idea to the next. It lives in the future, trying to figure out more complex concepts and helping us achieve our dreams. Ni shows us totally unimagined dreams and ideas.
Se – [extroverted sensing] Se is being used when we follow exciting impulses or instincts. This function lives in the present external moment, acting on the current data they have for immediate result. Se often doesn’t consider long term implications or consequences. They attempt to find relevant facts and experiences, and will continue until something else distracts them.
Si – [introverted sensing] Si stores data, then compares the present moment with their past sensory knowledge. This is often a ‘déjà vu’ feeling—reliving their past experiences, physical similarities, or connections they have made in the past. Si often ignores the future, living in the present or past moment. This function is also strongly linked to small details and getting a strong picture of their goals.
So, everyone has one S, N, F, and T function. (Two introverted and two extroverted.) When talking about functions, generally the shadow functions are not included--just a person's main 4 functions. The order of the functions determines your personality type.
The first function is your main one. It works closely with your second function, and 90% of your cognitive processes use these two processes.
Your third function isn't used very often. It occasionally says something useful, and occasionally makes you look like an idiot.
Your fourth function is used very rarely. Even as adults, this function is generally not very well developed. You can't control it well, and when called upon to use it, things don't look pretty.
The Function Stacks:
ESFP = Se-Fi-Te-Ni
ENFP = Ne-Fi-Te-Si
ISFP = Fi-Se-Ni-Te
INFP = Fi-Ne-Si-Te
ENTJ = Te-Ni-Se-Fi
ESTJ = Te-Si-Ne-Fi
INTJ = Ni-Te-Fi-Se
ISTJ = Si-Te-Fi-Ne
ESTP = Se-Ti-Fe-Ni
ENTP – Ne-Ti-Fe-Si
ISTP = Ti-Se-Ni-Fe
INTP = Ti-Ne-Si-Fe
ENFJ = Fe-Ni-Se-Ti
ESFJ = Fe-Si-Ne-Ti
INFJ = Ni-Fe-Ti-Se
ISFJ = Si-Fe-Ti-Ne
So. I'm ENTJ, my function stack is Te-Ni-Se-Fi. (If you are an extrovert, your first and third functions are extroverted. If you are an introvert, your first and third are introverted functions.) Now, an ENTP is basically is my complete cognitive opposite, even if we act similar (Ne-Ti-Fe-Si. See, no functions in common.) ENFJ functions are Fe-Ni-Se-Ti, and ENFP Ne-Fi-Te-Si.
(Now, an introvert [say ISTJ] would be Si-Te-Ni-Fe. Introverted functions are first and third there.)
It's a little complicated at first. Any questions, just ask
