So, everyone has four main functions that they use on a (fairly) regular basis.
But what about your other four functions, or so-called 'shadow functions?'
Shadow functions work beneath the surface. There is some debate as to how/how often you use them, but the general agreement is that 1) you can't control them, and 2) they are not consciously used anywhere near as often as your main four functions. Some argue that you only consciously use your shadow functions maybe a handful of times in your lifetime. Others claim that you use your shadow functions unconsciously on a daily basis, but we don't /know/ that we are using them.
The roles of each shadow function:
5th function: The function that jumps in to defend us. If we see someone else using this function (for me, an ENTJ, that would be Ti) we often get annoyed at them and think about how meaningless it is. When we act stubborn, this is the function we often use subconsciously. Stuff that we're bad at, and don't know you're bad at.
6th function: Good at taking care of other people, but not yourself. When we see someone using this function (Ne for me), we often interpret it as a personal attack. This function is also used as the 'voice in our head' who criticizes yourself as well as others. This function can also be stuff that we're good at, but don't /know/ we're good at.
7th function: Your absolute weakest function. It is often referred to as the 'trickster' function, that tricks even yourself into believing you aren't so good at stuff. (Si for me.) If you trust the things you experience when subconsciously using this function, you will fall flat on your face. Often described as things you are bad at, and know you're bad at.
8th function: Actually can be as strong as your first function at times. This function is how destructive or 'evil' you are when at your worst. Normally when this function is used, things are going to get ugly very quickly. (Fe for me.) This is where you put your worst experiences and extreme hatreds. If two people trigger the 8th function in each other, things are going to get really messy.
I do not have a complete understanding of this. If you have a correction or question, let me know!
